Dubai Mall's construction started in 2004 as part of the ambitious Downtown Dubai development. 

Opening and early development

The path to opening day came with its challenges. The mall pushed back its inauguration twice - moving from August 2008 to October 30, before finally opening its doors on November 4, 2008. Dubai Mall's launch featured about 1,000 retailers, making it the second-largest mall opening in retail history after Canada's West Edmonton Mall. 

A massive workforce brought this project to life. The construction site buzzed with 24,000 personnel at its peak, including the core team of 800 staff, 10,000 laborers, and many subcontractors. Dutco Balfour Beatty-Al Ghandi and Consolidated Contractors International won the USD 735 million contract, while Turner Construction managed the project.

Milestones in visitor growth

Dubai Mall's popularity soared from the start. The mall drew over 37 million visitors in 2009, and this number jumped to 47 million in 2010. The mall's visitor count reached 54 million by 2011, making it the most visited building worldwide.

The numbers kept climbing steadily. The growth continued into 2024, with 57 million visitors in the first half and about 111 million for the entire year.

Recent expansion and future plans

Dubai Mall has evolved constantly. Emaar announced an 820-meter air-conditioned metro link to Dubai's rail network in 2012. The mall's first expansion phase began in June 2013, adding one million square feet of retail space and wrapped up in 2018.

Emaar Properties showed their AED 1.5 billion (USD 408 million) expansion plan in June 2024. This new development will add 240 luxury stores and food venues, strengthening Dubai Mall's position as a global retail leader. The mall's new Exhibition Center spans 10,000 square meters with five multi-functional halls that can host 6,000 guests together.

Dubai Mall features over 1,200 retail outlets, offering something for every shopper. At its heart lies Fashion Avenue, a 440,000-square-foot luxury zone that hosts 150+ premium brands.

Among its highlights is Level Shoes, the world’s largest luxury footwear store, spanning 96,000 square feet and presenting over 200 international brands alongside 23 designer boutiques such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton.

Dining and leisure zones

More than 200 food and beverage spots offer everything from quick bites to fine dining. The connected Souk Al Bahar adds 22 restaurants with views of Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain.

Time Out Market Dubai sits within Souk Al Bahar. This culinary destination features 17 local chefs and restaurateurs chosen by Time Out Dubai's editors. Several upscale restaurants offer fountain-view terraces where guests can enjoy premium meals with spectacular views, making it the perfect spot to enjoy your time in Dubai.

Reel Cinemas and entertainment

Movie lovers will feel at home at Reel Cinemas. With 26 screens, it's known as "the largest and most luxurious cineplex in the world". The cinema pampers its guests with premium features like reclining seats and food delivered right to their seats.

Dubai Fountain and outdoor promenade

The Dubai Fountain sits on the beautiful Burj Lake. This spectacular fountain system, the world's largest, shoots water up to 500 feet high. The Waterfront Promenade gives visitors perfect spots to watch the show while enjoying meals at various dining terraces.

Dubai Dino and KidZania

The Dubai Dino is quite a sight to behold. This 155-million-year-old Diplodocus longus fossil stretches 24.4 meters long and stands 7.6 meters tall. This is a big deal as it means that 90% of its bones are original, compared to the usual 30% in most displays.

Scientists found this remarkable specimen in Wyoming's Dana Quarry back in 2008. Right next door, KidZania spreads across 80,000 square feet. This interactive mini-city lets children aged 2-16 try more than 40 different jobs. Kids can do everything from flying planes to reading the news.

Hysteria and other themed zones

Hysteria brings thrills and chills through 15 rooms of scary encounters. Visitors walk through dark spaces filled with frightening characters and unexpected surprises. You'll find it on the second floor near Reel Cinemas and KidZania.

Dubai Mall holds several world records, including being the largest shopping mall in the world, covering over 1.1 million m². It also features the world’s largest acrylic panel at the Dubai Aquarium, weighing 245 tons, and the largest OLED screen, measuring over 700 m².

Notable events like Dubai Mallathon

The mall's Dubai Mallathon in 2025 broke the Guinness World Record for the largest indoor mall run. This exciting event ran for a month and drew more than 40,000 participants. The final race at Dubai Hills Mall brought together 1,392 runners. The event was such a soaring win that organizers decided to extend it to three months starting in 2026.

Appearances in media and pop culture

National Geographic put the spotlight on the mall in their documentary series Megastructures. The mall also caught attention on BBC One's The Apprentice UK series during "Week 5: Dubai Discount Buying". The mall created quite a buzz when one of its Waterfall Fountain divers dressed up as Superman to celebrate the movie's premiere.
